‘Eclipse’ depicts the fleeting, “tormenting” nature of being in love. Being in love is one of the rare moments in which time seems briefly frozen and is experienced as timeless. It evokes the desire for a symbiosis, a shared universe detached from everyday reality. The disillusionment, the true “tormentor”, lies in the transience of this moment, like the magical yet ephemeral moment of a solar eclipse.

Created for the art route Kwelgeesten in Oostknollendam, ‘Eclipse’ took the form of a site-specific photo installation consisting of a life-size transparent photograph installed in the doorway of a floating shed within the open polder landscape and illuminated from behind with fluorescent light.

Two embracing figures form, through their posture and the backlighting, the contour of a solar eclipse. Passersby unexpectedly noticed them within the landscape: together isolated from the outside world and fully absorbed in one another. A timeless moment, yet at the same time elusive and transient.
