Artist statement

Through visual experiences, I invite viewers to dream alongside my film characters while illuminating our complex, ambiguous bond with nature. This tension between humanity, nature, and culture lies at the heart of my work. Yet, in this era of climate change and pandemics, the societal urgency to reflect deeper on humanity’s place within nature intensifies.

Biography

Yasmijn Karhof (b. 1974, Edam, NL) is a multimedia artist living and working in Amsterdam. She graduated from the Gerrit Rietveld Academy in 2000, with studies at The Cooper Union in New York (1998) and the UvA in Amsterdam, philosophy (aesthetics, 1998–2001), and completed a residency at the Rijksakademie in Amsterdam (2004–2005). In 2007, she spent six months in Japan researching the ambiguous Japanese view of nature and spatial aesthetics, influences that still echo in her work.
