2003, slide installation, 10 x 4 meter, inflatable sculptures, large format negatives transferred to 35mm slides, 4 slides
A desolate, cave-like landscape of inflated, skin-toned objects blurs the line between reality and illusion in ‘The First Private Pleasure Garden’. Four slide projectors bring this sensual and elusive world to life.
‘The First Private Pleasure Garden’ was featured in the group exhibition DUAL (3) at the Consortium in Amsterdam, curated by artists Margit Lukács and Maartje Vliervoet.
The installation (10 x 4 meters) presents a panoramic image, captured on large format negatives and projected through four 35mm slides. The inflatable sculptures form a winding, cave-like landscape, inspired by historical pleasure and scroll gardens. The skin-like forms, both sensual and monumental, evoke giant stalagmites and intimate human contours. Some objects appear immense, while others reveal glimpses into an infinite space. As a viewer, your shadow merges with the projection as you pass by, as if wandering through a microscopic world—part of a garden you can admire but never truly enter.
