‘Vessel’ is a collaboration by Jasper van den Brink and Yasmijn Karhof
‘Vessel’ unfolds a story through purely visual imagery. The leading role in ‘Vessel’ is played by a ship. No words are spoken in this 20-minute video loop, the first collaborative project between Dutch artists Yasmijn Karhof (NL) and Jasper van den Brink (NL). Its expressive force lies in sensuous multi-angle imagery that captures the world from a ship’s perspective, projected across three screens. Sometimes, it places the viewer in the ship’s viewpoint, as if it were a living entity. ‘Vessel’ plays with our imaginative powers while delving into the complexity of our relationship with ostensibly inanimate objects.
Awarded the Screengrab International New Media Arts Award, ‘Vessel’ premiered at VIDEONALE.14 (2013) at the Kunstmuseum Bonn, Germany.
‘Vessel’ emerged in 2012 during a residency at the USF Verftet Cultural Centre in Bergen, Norway, where Dutch artists Yasmijn Karhof and Jasper van den Brink were invited to work in this historic coastal port. The project was filmed aboard the Norwegian research ship ‘Johan Hjort’during a two-week scientific expedition in 2013, supported by the National Institute of Marine Research (IMR). The journey spanned from Bergen to Tromsø, crossing the Barents Sea toward Greenland, with a stop at Bjørnøya (Bear Island), before returning to Bergen.
