‘Desert Island’ is a sensual, immersive film that intimately portrays two individuals—lovers entwined in a passionate yet imaginary love experience. The work depicts love as a detached, almost magical reality: a world within a world where anything seems possible. Yet, this parallel realm also reveals the isolation from the outside world experienced when in love, leaving you adrift and alone, detached from reality.
The installation unfolds into a tangible emotional experience, a daydream familiar to many, where reality fades into imagination and the past merges with the present. How do memories, desires, and dreams intertwine in this fleeting experience?
Curator Anne Berk, vice president of Sculpture Network, describes ‘Desert Island’ as: “A timeless film about the eternal longing for connection amidst separation. That is the tragedy of human existence. Physically, you can become one, but mentally we continue wandering in our own minds. The way Karhof alternates between two screens to emphasize the underlying meaning is particularly beautiful. The theme of love serves as a common thread throughout her body of work.”
