‘Inner Space/Outer Space’ is an interactive video installation featuring a two-sided film screen with a woman on both sides, reading from Plato’s Symposium dialogues on love. In this dialogue, Aristophanes describes humanity’s eternal quest for its other half. The work invites viewers to feel they might connect with her, yet a true encounter remains elusive.

As the viewer approaches the back of the screen, they see her sitting in her living room; she then looks at you, stands up and disappears from view, her presence lingering only through sound. Each time you watch, the woman’s response feels different—she might slip away swiftly or linger a moment longer—and the sounds of her ‘absent presence’ shift subtly. Artist Yasmijn Karhof explains: “This work explores the longing to truly understand the other and the inherent impossibility of that desire.”

Awarded the BNG Workspace Project Award by ZAAL5 (Filmhuis Den Haag), this annual prize celebrates innovative explorations in the nature of film.

The jury praised Karhof’s ability to capture the spirit of the times with her installation: “In a conceptual and poetic way, she translates the longing for calm and reflection amidst a chaotic urban environment into a seemingly simple image. The interactive element entices the viewer to come closer and emphasizes the illusion that film is.”

The members of the jury of Workspace12 included: Maurice Bogaert (winner Workspace 11), Mariette Dölle (head of program of Tent. Rotterdam), Remco Vlaanderen (senior editor Submarine Channel), and Anna Abrahams (filmmaker and working at Eye Film Institute Netherlands).
