‘Elastic’ is a close-up photograph of a figure in pants that seem to burst under tension, the seams split as if the material has given way—though they are actually replaced with elastic thread.
Captured from multiple angles, the subject merges into a twisted, contorted image that evokes estrangement. The waistband of the pants appears to twist before your eyes, as if seen from two sides at once. This creates an almost bodily experience, a play with perception that makes spatiality tangible on a flat surface. Just as the Cubists once sought to do justice to the depiction of three-dimensional space on a two-dimensional plane, ‘Elastic’ captures our dynamic, subjective experience of reality.
