“It’s cloudy inside” is a slide installation that captures the elusive moment when reality slips beyond our grasp. This work emerged from a residency at Kings County Hospital in Brooklyn, NY, in 2016, where I spent three months at the invitation of the organization Beautiful Distress. Through intimate conversations with patients and caregivers, I explored the moment at which reality begins to unravel. They shared personal reflections on what reality means to them and how it feels losing grip on it, offering a rich tapestry of perspectives.
Each day, I distilled striking quotes from these conversations, written onto cardboard protest signs. The slide installation “It’s cloudy inside” presents these 100 protest signs in a loop, offering a cross-section of my research. The handwritten quotes reveal a spectrum of emotions and thoughts, from fear, confusion, and despair to hope and grandiosity, reflecting the experience when reality blurs and nothing is as it once seemed.
“It’s cloudy inside” invites viewers to shed assumptions about the assumed reality and embrace diverse perspectives. The work reveals deeper, often hidden layers of the human psyche, prompting reflection on how we define ‘truth’.
This research also gave rise to the immersive installation ‘Reality’ and the tapestry “Reality is a Fingerprint”, each exposing the fluid boundaries of reality. In 2017, “It’s cloudy inside” was showcased at De School in Amsterdam as part of the Beautiful Distress Art Manifestation on Mental Health.
