The monumental woven tapestry “Reality is a Fingerprint” was created during my artist-in-residency at Kings County Psychiatric Hospital in Brooklyn, NY. In this setting, I engaged in intimate conversations with psychiatric patients and mental health care providers about the experience of losing one’s grip on reality. “Reality is a Fingerprint” explores the fragile, shifting nature of reality, drawing from those experiences.
Winner of the German FBZ 2022 Special Art Award.
Caregivers and peer counselors are depicted gathering in the hospital courtyard, holding protest signs inscribed with quotes from patients and staff—reflecting a range of emotions spanning despair, fear, confusion, and grandeur. These voices, brought together in one image, offer a cross-section of my research into what is considered the normal experience of reality. The life sized woven scene invites viewers to step into this fluid, evolving narrative of shifting perceptions of the 'normal'.
The tapestry, crafted in collaboration with TextielLab, uses weaving to visualize this panoramic image—a choice that nods to traditional hospital activities common in psychiatric institutions.
"Reality is a Fingerprint” was exhibited at Museum Dr. Guislain, Ghent (BE) in 2018, and Nieuw Dakota/Francis Boeske Projects, Amsterdam (NL) in 2017. It is held in private collections and supported by Beautiful Distress, Mondriaan Fonds, and AFK.
