Collaboration by Jasper van den Brink and Yasmijn Karhof
'Vessel' tells a story in purely visual imagery. The leading role in 'Vessel' is played by a ship. No words are spoken in this twenty-minute video loop, the first collaborative project between Yasmijn Karhof (NL) and Jasper van den Brink (NL). Its expressive force lies in the sensuous images, which have been recorded from various angles and are projected onto three screens. Sometimes you see the world from the perspective of the ship, as though the ship were a living being. 'Vessel' plays with our imaginative powers and investigates the complexity of our relationship to ostensibly inanimate things.
'Vessel' was recorded on a Norwegian research ship. The USF Verftet Cultural Centre in Bergen, Norway, invited Karhof and van den Brink to spend a period working in this historic coastal port. The national Institute of Marine Research (IMR) gave permission to join a two-week trip on the scientific research ship Johan Hjort to film the material on board. The voyage took them from Bergen to Tromsø in the North of Norway, then from Tromsø across the Barents Sea towards Greenland and mooring at Bjørnøya (Bear Island), before returning to Bergen.
'Vessel' was granted the Screengrab International New Media Arts Award and has been shown at the exhibition VIDEONALE.14 (2013) in the Kunstmuseum Bonn.
